The Client's Role
By Joyce Booth (edited)

Often when someone thinks of seeking counseling, their focus is on what the
counselor’s role is.  Let’s look at this process from a different view, namely what
the role of the client is.

(1) The client’s role is to be
open.  Choosing to work on one’s inner self is an
exciting adventure.  Openness to the areas at which God is pointing is elementary.
(2) The client’s role is to be
honest.  Truthfulness and trust are very important
parts of the counselor/client relationship.  Honesty with one’s self is the
beginning, and courage to share with the counselor continues this process.
(3) The client’s role is to
define their goals.  It’s difficult to work toward
something in one’s life without knowing where they are going.  This gives an
exciting sense of purpose.
(4) The client’s role is to be
patient with the process.  Real change comes very
slowly.  It takes time to make a new path and to change old patterns.  Hurrying
does not speed up the process.
(5) The client’s role is to be
willing to do the assignments given by the
counselor.  Assignments give the client a very active part in the whole overall
process of getting well.
(6) The client’s role is to be
responsible to their appointments.  If something
unforeseen comes up,   the client needs to notify the counselor promptly because
the counselor’s time is valuable too.

The client is a courageous person.  It’s been said that we should all be able to
handle our own problems, and that it’s a weakness to need counseling.  Actually,
the opposite is true.  God uses people to do His work.  In times of weakness, it
takes strength and courage to say, “I need help,” and to begin a very exciting
process as a client.
